Suspected smuggled narcotics found in Rarotonga

Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

A quantity of what's believed to be narcotics found in a retailer's shipping container in Rarotonga is to be sent to New Zealand for analysis.

Small packets of a powder substance were found late last week in one of the pallets by the food outlet's workers who reported it to authorities.

Cook Islands police spokesperson Trevor Pitt said the weight of the substance, believed to be narcotics, has not yet been disclosed.

"We cannot officially determine the narcotic until it is sent for analysis in New Zealand — this will take time to process while CIB continues with the investigation," he said.

The Cook Islands find comes as Fiji police investigate its biggest drug haul on record.

Police in Nadi found 3.5 tonnes of methamphetamine in an empty house that's under construction after a tip off.

Stored in 797 medium sized containers wrapped in brown tape, its believed to have been destined for the Australian market.
