Pierce Brosnan has pleaded not guilty after allegedly hiking into prohibited areas of Yellowstone National Park.

Pierce Brosnan has pleaded not guilty to allegedly hiking in a restricted area of Yellowstone National Park.

The former James Bond star, 70, was charged with illegally entering Yellowstone National Park's thermal area in December.

BBC News reports that according to new court documents, Brosnan has pleaded not guilty to two alleged infractions — one for walking into a restricted thermal area, the other for wandering into Mammoth Terraces.

The thermal areas within the park include hot springs, geysers, mud pots, travertine terraces and fumaroles. The park warns that the ground below the thermal areas "may be only a thin crust above boiling hot springs".

According to Yellowstone National Park's official site, parkgoers must stay on the established walking pathways because the "pools are acidic enough to burn through boots".

Brosnan was in the park on a personal visit and not for film work, the US Attorney's Office for Wyoming said.

A photo appearing to show Brosnan in sunglasses and a brimmed hat posing by the snow-encrusted springs was uploaded to an Instagram account mocking Yellowstone's "tourons" (tourist morons) in December.

The 70-year-old was initially scheduled to appear in court on January 23 for the November 1 incident.

The New York Times reports a Wyoming judge granted Brosnan's request for a virtual hearing on February 20.
