The woman was found on State Highway 1 yesterday but she is now "safe and well", police said.

A previously-unidentified woman in a wheelchair found on State Highway 1 in Northland yesterday has been reunited with her family.

A police spokesperson yesterday said it was possible the woman was from Auckland.

"Police are appealing for the public's help to reunite this woman with her family."

In a social media post last night, police confirmed the mystery had been solved.

"We are happy to report that the woman located on State Highway 1 in Pakaraka... has been reunited with her family, and is safe and well," a spokesperson said. "We thank the public for their assistance, a great example of safer communities together."

Pakaraka is a small settlement around 20km south of Kerikeri.

The closest towns include Moerewa, Kawakawa, Kaikohe, and Russell.
