A man has died after he "got into difficulty in the water" at Ruakākā Beach in Northland this morning.

Police were called to the beach shortly after 11am.

"He was recovered from the water and brought to shore where CPR was performed," police said.

"Sadly, he was unable to be revived."

The man's death will be referred to the coroner.
