Former All Blacks assistant coach Joe Schmidt will reportedly become the next Wallabies head coach, with an official reveal expected within days, according to an Australian report.

An announcement on Eddie Jones' replacement from Rugby Australia is expected soon, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The newspaper reported that some paperwork still had to be finalised before the appointment of the former Ireland coach could be formally announced.

The expression of interest process for the head coach role only closed last Friday.

Senior players were told of Schmidt's appointment yesterday night, The Roar reports.

Schmidt, 58, worked with the All Blacks at last year's World Cup and coached Ireland between 2013 and 2019. During his time at the helm for Ireland, Schmidt won three Six Nations Championships, including a Grand Slam success in 2018.

He was also in charge of historic wins over the All Blacks in 2016 and 2018.

Schmidt joined the All Blacks in late 2021, initially as a selector before being promoted to a coaching set-up midway through 2022, whilst coach Ian Foster faced intense scrutiny from critics.

Last year, Schmidt quashed rumours of a bid to become Foster's successor.
