Queen 'infuriated' at Harry and Meghan's Lilibet name claim

January 16, 2024

The late Queen was reportedly "infuriated" by claims made by Harry and Meghan that she had approved the pair naming their daughter Lilibet — her childhood nickname.

The explosive claims come in a new book by royal journalist Robert Hardman — Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story — which quoted a royal member of staff saying "that Elizabeth II had been 'as angry as I'd ever seen her' in 2021 after the Sussexes announced that she had given them her blessing to call their baby daughter 'Lilibet', the queen's childhood nickname".

"The couple subsequently fired off warnings of legal action against anyone who dared to suggest otherwise, as the BBC had done. However, when the Sussexes tried to co-opt the Palace into propping up their version of events, they were rebuffed."

Senior members of the royal family have wished Lilibet - the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex - a happy first birthday.

According to The Telegraph, Harry and Meghan's threat of legal action against the BBC did not progress.

The BBC had reported a palace source as saying the Queen "was not asked by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex about naming their daughter Lilibet".

According to the Telegraph, a palace source suggested the late Queen was "told" about the name after Lilibet's birth, rather than being asked beforehand.

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan previously said: "The duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement, in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called.

"During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name."
