Kerr a class above as Blaze book grand final berth

January 15, 2024

Amelia Kerr has continued her rich vein of form, scoring her third unbeaten half-century in four games to lead the Wellington Blaze to a comfortable victory over the Northern Brave.

Kerr scored a 49-ball 73 as the Blaze cruised to their target of 124 with two overs to spare in a rain-shortened game at the Basin Reserve.

A delayed start saw the game reduced to 17 overs a side, and the Brave got off to a flyer thanks to the hard hitting of Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu.

She blazed seven fours and two sixes in just 20 balls before being run out for 45. The rest of the Brave batters were unable to capitalise on the start Athapaththu had provided, only able to add just over 50 runs in the final 10 overs.

Spinners Kerr (2-22) and Leigh Kasperek (3-16) were key for the Blaze in reining in the innings.

In reply, Kerr and Rebecca Burns (42) combined for a 94-run partnership after losing Jess McFadyen early. While Burns fell, Kerr smashed Athapaththu for 16 off the 15th over to seal the victory for the Blaze.

The result means the Wellington side have booked a spot in their seventh straight Super Smash final.
