Snake pulled from ice dispenser of Adelaide family's fridge

January 14, 2024

When an Adelaide mum went to her fridge to fill her glass with ice, chills were sent down her spine when she was instead greeted by a slippery visitor.

A red-bellied black snake had become tangled up in her fridge's ice dispenser, a cool place to stay as hot summer weather across South Australia drives serpents into people's homes.

Snake catcher Simon Hempel used his 26 years of experience to extract the icy visitor before heading off to more jobs brought on by the heat.

"My usual day in 30-plus degrees starts off at about 9.30 with a snake callout, and then it's every hour after that," the Adelaide Hills snake catcher told 9 News.

Most catches this season have involved the eastern brown snake, the second-most venomous in the world.

Adelaide residents are being told to stay vigilant as more reptiles seek shelter from the heat.
