A pair of scripts from the TV show Friends which were found in a bin then kept in a bedside drawer for more than 20 years have been auctioned off in the United Kingdom.

The sale collected a whopping £22,000 (NZD$44,900), according to reports by the BBC.

The scripts, The One With Ross's Wedding Part I and Part II, were from season 4, which aired in 1998.

219 bids were made from around world with Australia, Switzerland, the United States, Dubai, Germany, Ukraine and Spain all taking part.

The new owner, unnamed, was an online international bidder.

Auctioneers at Hanson Ross in Hertfordshire said they were taken aback by the global interest in the scripts - which should have been destroyed immediately after filming in 1998.

The anonymous seller recounted when they found the scripts.

"I remember wondering which member of the cast they might have belonged to," they said.

"When I came to clear my desk, I just swept everything into a big cardboard box. I forgot the scripts were there.

"They ended up in a bedside drawer, and they've been there ever since. I could have quite easily have thrown them out."

The seller said the scripts "deserve to be owned by a big Friends fan".

It’s not clear who the scripts belonged to on set, but Auctioneers at Hanson Ross say it would’ve been someone in the cast or crew.

"There is a sticker for a chap called John Lanzer who is a set designer, so they possibly could have been his," they said.

The scripts were estimated to sell for between $1180 and $1600 before global interest descended.
