Heat alert issued for Auckland: 'Keep hydrated'

January 12, 2024

MetService has issued a heat alert for Auckland as high temperatures and humidity combine for another sweltering day.

The temperature is expected to peak at 27C, but the added humidity prompted the warning.

"We advise you to keep hydrated, seek shade, check in with vulnerable people and look after your pets & livestock."

Using 20 years of data, meteorologists picked a threshold for 46 locations across the country, with the alert triggered if the mercury spikes.

MetService said Wānaka and Twizel could hit 30C today, while easterly winds will see temperatures ease in Canterbury and Otago after some spots surged into the 30s yesterday.

Temperatures are expected to rise again tomorrow.

Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast for parts of the South Island this weekend.

"An active front will bring heavy rain to the west of the South Island this weekend, as well as strong northwest winds to exposed parts of the far south."

There are heavy rain watches at various times for Westland about and south of Otira, Fiordland and the headwaters of the Otago lakes and rivers.

There's also a strong wind watch for Fiordland, Southland, Stewart Island and Clutha for 12 hours from 10am tomorrow.
