Contaminated run-off contained after ITM fire in Tākaka

Firefighters have contained a large fire at an ITM building in Takaka early this morning.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 3am, Nelson Marlborough - Fire and Emergency said today in a statement.

At its peak, there were 13 fire trucks on the scene.

"The ITM building centre in Tākaka is now contained and crews are mopping up," it said.

A number of trucks are still at the scene and a fire investigator is on the way.

Smoke from the fire has affected businesses in the area. In a post to social media, Katie from Golden Bay Early Learning Centre said the centre would be closed today.

"This is to ensure the safety of our tamariki and kaiako," it said.

The Golden Bay Workcentre Trust said it is also closed.

"Sending love to our neighbours."

Waka Kotahi said SH60 is closed near Buxton Lane due to the fire.

There are "no pollutants" in the Motupipi Stream or Rototai Estuary following the fire, the Tasman District Council said in an update this afternoon.

The council earlier said there were concerns the fire at the outlet "may have led to the discharge" of multiple chemicals into the Motupipi waterway.

Contaminated run-off has been confined to a drain off Motupipi St, where it will be extracted, the council said.

"Harmless red dye has now been placed into the stormwater system at the fire site to assess if there are any other points where potentially contaminated water may have discharged to.

"There is no reticulated water supply in Tākaka and so residents and businesses use private bores for water. If people notice the red dye in their water supply, they should contact Tasman District Council as soon as possible."

Homeowners who collect water from roofs have been asked to divert pipes away from their collection tanks due to ash falling in the area.
