Rhys Darby teases Flight of the Conchords reunion

January 10, 2024
Rhys Darby has teased a possible Flight of the Conchords reunion.

Rhys Darby has indicated that a reunion of Flight of the Conchords could happen one day.

Darby — who played band manager Murray Hewitt in the hit two-season HBO series — spoke to Deadline at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday and hinted a reunion with co-stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie could be on the horizon.

"We’re always discussing the sort of things we’d like to do in the future and looking back at the classic things we’ve done," he said.

"There will come a time when the world really, really needs [the reunion] and we will suddenly appear."

Darby also said he would be open to reprising his role as Anton the werewolf from the hit indie film What We Do in the Shadows.

"I would love to, of course. I am the ultimate werewolf Anton, leader of the pack," he said.

"My character is in New Zealand so they have to have some sort of storyline to get me there but I’m always up for anything as long as it’s funny and people get something out of it."

Our Flag Means Death cancelled

Meanwhile, it was announced today that Taika Waititi and Darby’s period comedy series Our Flag Means Death has been cancelled after two seasons.

Deadline reported that the series, which debuted on US streaming service Max (formerly HBO Max) in March 2022, will not go ahead for a third season.

A statement to the news outlet from Max said: "While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life.

"We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show."

The show's creator David Jenkins confirmed the news on social media.

"The good news? We’ve spent two seasons in a bizarre, beautifully-rendered world populated by some of the greatest actors and creatives working," he wrote.

"And the second season was made possible by the enthusiasm of one of the most likable fan communities in the history of this medium.

"The bad news is clear. OUR FLAG won’t be returning for a third season.

"We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max. I’m very sad I won’t set foot on the Revenge again with my friends, some of whom have become close to family. But I couldn’t be more grateful for being allowed to captain the damn thing in the first place."
