A metre-long crocodile was an unwelcome visitor to a backyard chicken coop in Queensland yesterday morning.
The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) said the saltwater croc was spotted by residents in their backyard in Cape Hillsborough near Mackay at around 9am yesterday (local time).
Initially thinking it was a goanna, they soon realised it was a crocodile and called DESI to have the reptile removed from the coop, 9News reports.
Department staff placed the crocodile in a pipe and took it to a DESI facility in Mackay.
"While it isn't unusual to see crocodiles around Mackay, it is unusual to find one in someone's backyard," DESI Senior Wildlife Officer Jane Burns said.
"This is a good reminder to everyone in croc country that crocodiles can turn up in unexpected places, so it's important to always be Crocwise and report all sightings to DESI as soon as you can."
A post to the Queensland Environment Facebook page read: "After several weeks of heavy rain across parts of croc country, crocs may be turning up in funny places."
All chickens in the coop were accounted for.
