Late drama at Hagley Oval as Magicians and Brave tie

January 9, 2024
Canterbury's Frankie Mackay is run out by Northern's Chamari Athapaththu at Hagley Oval.

The Canterbury Magicians and Northern Districts Brave have dramatically tied their T20 Super Smash match at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval this afternoon.

Needing two to win off the final ball in pursuit of the Brave's 136-9, Canterbury's Lea Tahuhu swept to deep square leg and was run out attempting the second run off Kayley Knight’s throw.

It is the first tied game of the season, but not the first for the Magicians, who have tied against Auckland and Otago previously.

After appearing to be in control of the chase, with Frankie Mackay hitting 47 off 41 in partnership with fellow opener Kate Anderson, who hit 41 off 35, including eight fours, Canterbury needed seven off the final over but were caught just short.

The Magicians put on 66 for the first wicket before Anderson went, and there followed a steady procession of wickets, although the home side would have been confident of victory heading into the final over given they had lost only five in total.

Chamari Athapaththu was the Brave's best batter with 35 off 29, including six fours and one six, with spinner Sarah Asmussen taking 3-27 for the Magicians. Mackay took 2-21.

There were four runouts during the Magicians’ innings, with Mackay, Fatima Sana, Izzy Sharp and Tahuhu all short of their ground.

The result leaves Northern stuck to the foot of the table, with Canterbury third behind Wellington and Central.
