An abandoned building in Levin was levelled in a huge and "suspicious" blaze early this morning.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) were called to the Bath St scene at about 3.50am.
1News understands the derelict building was formerly the Bupa Gardenview Care Home for people with dementia.
The building was "totally destroyed", a FENZ spokesperson said.
"Fire crews prioritised protecting surrounding properties as the building was abandoned and scheduled for demolition."

The blaze has been deemed suspicious and a fire investigator will visit the scene today.
Stuff reports the site has previously been the subject of another arson investigation.
"Locals will see smoke for most of the day," FENZ said, adding crews remain in the area this morning.
The public and road users were urged to avoid the area.
A police spokesperson confirmed officers are investigating the fire.
"The cause is currently unexplained and police would encourage anyone with information who has not already spoken to police to please get in touch by phone on 105."
