A number of roads in central Hāwera were closed this morning as emergency services responded to a gas leak.
People were evacuated from the cordoned area as "a precaution" and others were asked to avoid the scene, police said.
"Emergency services are responding to a gas leak at the intersection of Union Street and Nelson Street," a spokesperson said.
"Cordons are in place on a number of streets intersecting Union Street, including High Street, Grey Street and Wellington Street.
"Cordons are also in place near Countdown and the intersection of Nelson and Princes streets."
At about 11.30am, police said the cordons have now been lifted and "there is no ongoing threat to the public".
