1 Are we ready for another soggy January? NIWA says heavy rain possible in parts
A potential "period of heavy rain" has been forecasted for mid-to-late January, particularly for the North Island and northern South Island, according to NIWA's seasonal outlook.
In Auckland, Northland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty, "spells of heavy rain" may occur in the second half of January.
"However, the season may also be defined by longer dry spells, particularly in February-March," according to NIWA meteorologists.
2 Learner driver test rules changed to stop people 'clogging' system
Waka Kotahi NZTA is temporarily changing driver licensing rules to stop learner drivers from "clogging" available test slots after changes last year made it easier for people to re-sit their exam.
Land transport deputy director Neil Cook said the change "may encourage applicants who fail tests to better prepare for their next attempt".

Violent incidents at Middlemore Hospital's emergency department have nearly halved as extra security guards are called in to work around the clock.
