Kiwis across the country are eager to start the new year afresh — decluttering their homes.
But clearing out cupboards and saying goodbye to household items gathering dust can sometimes feel overwhelming. So 1News asked Liz Bradley, the Tidy Lady, for some handy tips to help declutter.
She started by giving advice on the wardrobe, saying people use them to "store everything under the sun".
Bradley said moving things that you won't be using in the summer, like warm jumpers and jackets, is a great way to clear this space.
"What you might want to do is repack them into lower plastic containers that are airtight and stackable," she said.
She said the pantry was another place where help was needed most — where things often slip to the back of the shelf to die.
"Things expire, it's stressful and overwhelming and generally just yuck," she said.
But Bradley said there is a simple solution for this.
"If you have a container that runs the depth and you can pull it out, then you can immediately see what's in the back."
She also said attention needs to be paid to those "I might need it later" items.
"It’s really amazing how many feelings we have attached to our objects."
But she said letting things go doesn’t always mean putting them in the bin.
"Some can go to a good home, whether that’s a donation or a sale."
She said it can be "life-changing".
"It really is stunning the difference it can make."
