Missing swimmer named as Karioitahi beach search continues

Search efforts are continuing for a swimmer missing in the water near an Auckland beach since yesterday.

Three people were swimming near Karioitahi Beach when they got into difficulty yesterday evening.

Two people made it back to shore but a third failed to return.

Police LandSAR and Surf Life Saving new Zealand crews are resuming their search.

Police today confirmed the missing swimmer as Hiran Joseph, 19, of Auckland.

Police say they are continuing to provide support to his family through this "incredibly difficult period of time."

Local iwi have placed a rāhui on recreational fishing and swimming from today until January 11.

"It extends from directly in front of the Surf Club at Karioitahi Beach heading north to Hamilton’s Gap," a spokesperson said.

Police wish thank the public for their compassion and understanding at this difficult time as the search continues.
