Two men are in critical condition after they were found shot and "unresponsive" in an Auckland car overnight.

Police are appealing to potential witnesses for help after officers first responded to the incident in the suburb of Manurewa at around 3.20am.

Armed police were later seen at the scene on Addington Avenue.

Detective Inspector Karen Bright said part of the road remains closed off to vehicles.

She said officers remained at the scene on Sunday afternoon.

Armed police were at the scene in Auckland's Manurewa this morning.

"Police were called to an Addington Avenue address where two men were found unresponsive in a vehicle," she said.

"They were transported to hospital in a critical condition with gunshot wounds.

"Police remain at the scene and have closed off part of Addington Avenue while enquiries are ongoing. We believe that this was an isolated incident and there is not thought to be an ongoing risk to the community.

"Police have completed a scene examination and are making enquiries to determine the circumstances of the incident but are also seeking the public’s help."

Authorties urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has information that could assist with the investigation to call 105, citing file number 240101/2378.
