Road toll: One dead after car crashes into water in Coromandel

A person has died after a crash in Te Puru on the Coromandel Peninsula last night.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident on Te Puru Creek Rd at about 8.45pm.

"Police were called after a car left the road and crashed into the water," a spokesperson said in a statement.

"A second person suffered serious injuries.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are under way."

It brings the Christmas-New Year holiday road toll to 15, including two dead in a crash in Christchurch overnight.
