Two confirmed dead after quad bike rolls into Far North swimming hole

Two people missing after a quad bike crashed into a swimming hole in the Far North yesterday have died, police confirmed today.

Six people were on board the ATV when it rolled into a swimming hole on the swollen Waikainga Stream in Peria about 5.15pm yesterday, police said.

"Four of the six on board were able to make it out of the water, however efforts to locate two missing persons are ongoing," police said in a statement yesterday evening.

"Three people and the driver have been taken to hospital with minor-to-moderate injuries."

The bodies of the pair were pulled from the water today.

A rāhui is in place on the Waikainga Stream from Shepherds Rd to the Peria Saleyards Bridge.

"Police extend condolences to the whānau of the deceased," police said today.

The police are making inquiries on behalf of the coroner.
