Road toll at 12 after second death in Kaimai Ranges crash

The Christmas-New Year holiday road toll stands at 12 after a second death following a crash in the Kaimai Ranges earlier this week.

The two-vehicle crash on State Highway 29 crash saw motorists travelling between Hamilton and Tauranga facing a near 100-kilometre detour on Thursday.

Police initially announced one death. A second was announced this morning.

"Police can confirm a person has died in hospital overnight following a crash on State Highway 29, Kaimai on Thursday," a spokesperson said in a statement. "This is the second fatality following this crash.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."
