It’s looking like a hot but wet New Year’s Eve, with showers forecast for much of the country as Kiwis prepare to bring in 2024.
In the west of the South Island, heavy rain is on the cards. It's expected to move northwards over the country tomorrow.
This is expected to bring heavy rain to Mount Taranaki along with west of the South Island, and gale northwesterlies to central New Zealand. MetService has issued severe warnings and watches as a result.
“People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and check if further areas are added,” said a MetService spokesperson.
Showers are forecast for the rest of the country at different points throughout the day.
In Auckland, Northland and Tauranga, showers are set to turn to rain in the afternoon, which could possibly become heavy and thundery, and easing in the late evening. Temperatures are set for 26C.
For festival goers in Gisborne, occasional rain is expected to develop in the late afternoon. There will also be north westerlies in the morning and afternoon, with temperatures of 28C.
In Wellington, no showers are forecast, however a strong wind warning is in place from 7am to 4pm tomorrow with wind gusts possibly reaching 120km/h. Temperatures are expected to reach 21C.
"Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles," said MetService.
In Christchurch, showers are clearing early and returning around midday. Hail is possible in the evening along with squally thunderstorms, with temperatures forecast at 26C.
Those near Queenstown for the new year can expect showers from the afternoon, which could become heavy, clearing to fine in the evening. Temperatures are cooler here, forecast at 17C.
