Grace Millane's mother and cousin have been appointed OBEs in the UK for their charity work in the wake of Grace's death.

Grace was murdered while backpacking in Auckland in December 2018. It was the night before her 22nd birthday.

Gillian Millane and Hannah O'Callaghan founded Love Grace after Grace's death. The charity donates handbags filled with practical items to victims of abuse because "our Grace loved a handbag."

The charity also raises money for White Ribbon. The pair have been appointed to the Order of the British Empire for services to charitable fundraising and tackling violence against women.

In a statement, Gillian and Hannah paid tribute to their lost loved one.

"We are so humbled that Love Grace has been acknowledged and would like to thank those who nominated us," the pair told the BBC.

"Thank you to everyone who has donated, and all of our friends and family who have helped us with Love Grace.

"We would like to accept this award on their behalf and in Grace's name.

"We will continue to raise awareness of the issues many face, and make sure that no other family has to go through this."

Other recipients of UK New Year honours include actor Emilia Clarke and a number of players from the Lionesses, the England women's football team that came second at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year.
