Should we be scared of artificial intelligence?

Tech and public policy experts are predicting a regulatory crackdown on artificial intelligence, as the technology continues to become more widespread.

From how we work, to how we travel, and how we shop, AI is becoming increasingly ingrained into our lives. But it wasn't until this year that it became front and centre as one of the greatest social issues of our time.

"I didn't think AI would be a dominating issue because AI is actually not new," said Niki Christoff, a Washington DC-based tech expert and public policy adviser.

She has advised big tech firms as well as presidential candidates.

"Essentially what I think has changed is that instead of it being an underlying tech we don't think about we suddenly had a consumer product."

The product that got everyone thinking about AI was ChatGPT, a text-based program that used open source info to create human-like answers to an infinite number of questions or requests.

Want a recipe? You've got it. Want a manuscript for a play? You could suddenly rival Shakespeare, or be him, it was entirely your choice.

Other tech giants were also leaping into artificial intelligence and creating consumer products - Meta, X, Microsoft, Apple, Google - pretty much everyone.

Christoff said fears around what the tech could do for things like jobs were being honed in on by politicians - especially in the US.

"If you look at January 2023 now to now, almost every other policy issue has been dropped, and what's been picked up is AI," she told 1News.
