As the curtain draws on 2023, MetService is forecasting a mixed bag of weather, with wet, warm conditions and thunderstorms on the cards.
Despite the unfortunate news for many, most parts of the country can also look forward to periods of settled weather with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the summer sun throughout the week.
Thunderstorms are the theme for the northern and eastern North Island today. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Northland from 1pm to 5pm this afternoon, and Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay from 1pm to 12am.
"Severe thunderstorms bring a risk of very intense downpours and the possibility of surface flooding," MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane said.
"While festivities are underway, it’s prudent to stay updated on the latest forecasts at www.metservice.com, as a Red Thunderstorm Warning will be issued for any storms that become severe."
But today also mark a shift to cooler, fresher air in the eastern South Island, which will then move to the lower North Island tomorrow.
This brief cooldown, following warm and humid days, precedes a return to warmer conditions on Friday, potentially reaching 30C in Canterbury.
As warmth dominates the east, Friday will bring wetter conditions elsewhere, courtesy of one of the last active weather system of the year.
Western parts of the North and South Island are in for rain or showers, accompanied by strong winds in the South Island and lower North Island.
But there's some good news for those wanting to soak up some rays over the weekend, with a front sweeping through to bring settled weather on Saturday and the first part of Sunday.
However, another frontal system is expected to arrive on Sunday for a final hurrah.
Makgabutlane encouraged everyone to "take full advantage of the good weather when it’s there" during this changeable week.
