This week's Christmas Good Sorts are a mother-daughter duo giving cats a second chance.
At 96 years old, New Plymouth woman Mollie Haines could be New Zealand’s oldest volunteer.
Her journey began when her daughter Susan started volunteering upon retirement seven years ago, later asking her mum to join her.
“We work as a team,” said Susan. “What she can’t bend down to pick up, I pick it up for her.”
The two volunteer together at SPCA Taranaki, cleaning cat runs, changing litter trays, topping up food and water and giving the cats plenty of cuddles.
Coming from a foster home herself, Mollie loves working with the cats people don’t want anymore.
“I’m not sad that they probably came from bad homes, they don’t know what’s good till they come in here,” she said.
