December 23, 2023

A man spear fishing has been airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after being "pummelled by waves" in Port Waikato this morning.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded to reports of a man in his 30s suffering a non-fatal drowning near Port Waikato.

The man had been spear fishing in the area when he was pummelled by the waves and dragged down by his catch bag.

A passing boat saw him and pulled him in.

"Westpac Rescue Auckland Crew landed on the beach and offloaded our clinical crew with gear to meet surf life guards and treat the patient," said a spokesperson.

St John said it was notified of the incident around 11.40am on Saturday and responded with one ambulance and one manager.
