The holiday season has ushered in a wave of goodwill in the heart of Hawke's Bay, as the spirit of Christmas shines brightly thanks to a team of Christmas "elves".

The Elves of Hawke's Bay have been ceaselessly working to distribute donated goods, ensuring that smiles and joy reach every doorstep across the region.

More than 100 volunteer "elves" meticulously packed and delivered gifts to various corners of the weather battered region.

"We're going Eskdale, I'm going to Pirimai, and Marinui," three volunteers said as they sorted through items to be distributed.

Each parcel was crafted with love and consideration for its recipient. From an older lady passionate about gardening to a family who lost their home due to the floods earlier in the year, the parcels were tailored to bring specific needs for each family.

The assortment of goods inside the packages is diverse, ranging from the latest toys to essential everyday items.

"There's so many people out there that need help, and it's just marvellous what all these firms donate. Everyone will get something for Christmas," Santa himself told 1News.

Remarkably, even those deeply affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, like Ella Collins with her two kids, are actively participating in the initiative, driven by their determination to be involved despite facing personal hardships.

Elves of Hawke's Bay organiser Nancy Rewi said Christmas adds a lot of stress for many already struggling.

"It breaks my heart knowing there are Whānau struggling, kid's going without. But for us, it's knowing we can help make a difference by taking away some of the stress over the Christmas period," she said.

This year, the challenges have been magnified, particularly due to the aftermath of the floods.

The cost of living has also escalated, intensifying the stress for many families. Yet, the community has united, assembling over 230 kai hampers to support those in need, a testament to their resilience and compassion.

Once again, East Coasters have shown unwavering love for their community.
