It’s the preseason for Super Rugby currently but, more importantly for Blues hooker Soane Vikena, it’s the season for giving.

Vikena and his Fijian mates have joined together to create an official group focused on helping their local community. And what better time to give back than the festive season?

"I’m very lucky myself," Vikena said. "I play footy, giving back to my people – that’s the meaning behind this youth group called HOP."

HOP stands for Helping Our People and was formed after discussions around the kava bowl between the band of brothers.

It didn’t take long to come to fruition with sponsors now on board as well.

"We're always seen as these quiet people in the background, never going around and giving back," Vikena said. "To be here and doing it is incredible."

With just days before Christmas, HOP headed to Auckland City Mission to spread some cheer for those needing it.

Auckland City Mission general manager of brand innovation and income Jacqui Dillon said the gesture means a lot at this time of year.

"For us, we're grateful for any and all help we can get. The Blues have helped us a lot over the years.

"It takes a lot to reach out for help – by the time you've reached the Mission, you've pretty much exhausted all other avenues."

The HOP boys pound the pavements, hitting Queen Street and beyond to offer food packages and help to the homeless.

Apart from HOP’s help, the Mission has handed out 8000 food boxes and around 40,000 presents to children in the lead up to Christmas.

But even when the festive lights come down and wrapping paper is disposed of, HOP will be looking to help out.

"We want to get bigger," Vikena said. "This is starting off small."
