One person has died after a vehicle took off from a police checkpoint in Northland.

The vehicle fled from police conducting the checkpoint on Beach Road in Whangārei.

Police later located the vehicle which had crashed around 6.42pm and the driver of the vehicle died at the scene.

A police statement said more information would be provided when available.
