One person has died after a "water-related incident" in the Far North last night.
Emergency services were alerted to reports of a missing diver in Waihihi Bay at about 6.40pm yesterday.
A body was found in the water just before 2am this morning.
"Our thoughts are with their family at this sad time," Inspector Riki Whiu said. "The death will be referred to the coroner."
Coastguard New Zealand regional manager Jonny Bannister confirmed details of the search.
"Coastguard Bay of Islands volunteers onboard Kokako Rescue took the lead in the search efforts, supported by the Coastguard Operations Centre, overseeing and coordinating an extensive search that involved up to 15 private vessels," he said.
