A 50-year-old Kiwi man has died in a Rarotonga lagoon.

A 50-year-old New Zealand man died in a Rarotonga lagoon yesterday afternoon.

Cook Island Police said that they received a distress call at 4.05pm on Tuesday (Monday local time) reporting a person in difficulty near the Avaavaroa Passage.

The man was recovered from the water by a tour operator who had gone out to help him, but he was unresponsive.

The area, in the island's south, is popular with those wanting to swim with turtles.

Police are awaiting a medical report as inquiries continue.

This is the third drowning incident in Rarotonga this year,
