Kiwi Formula E driver Mitch Evans is home for a quick visit in between the FIA Motorsport Awards held in Azerbaijan and January’s season opener in Mexico.

“Always be a special place in my heart, always try and make an effort to come down as much as I can unfortunately it's not as much as I would like” said the Jaguar driver.

But next season he’ll have a little slice of home driving alongside him, Nick Cassidy joining him in an all Kiwi line up for the 2024 Formula E series.

“Nick and I have grown up together since we were six, we started go karts at the same time, we've been best friends for many years so now to be racing one of the biggest championships in the world… as teammates, as kiwis honestly it's quite surreal.”

Their relationship was tested earlier this year when Evans crashed into Cassidy at the Rome event, derailing both of their Championship chances.

In the end Cassidy finished second overall in the Championship, Evans third but between them they ensured New Zealand had more race wins in the season than any other nation – another success story for Kiwi motorsport.

“Going back to the Denny Hulme, Chris Amon, Bruce McLaren days that was a real golden patch for Kiwi motorsport and I feel like that's this is the next period for that, just really an honour to be part of that.”

Although, Evans’ life now exists a world away from the Auckland suburb of Lynfield where he grew up.

In Monaco he lives in the same neighbourhood as Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen and he goes to the same gym as Novak Djokovic.

Evans determined to achieve world domination like they both have, having finished in the top three for the past two years in the all electric racing series.

“I'm not going to be satisfied until I get that championship. In 12 months time if I can call myself a World Champion I’ll be extremely proud and satisfied.”
