Dozens of firearms and 15,000 ammunition rounds seized in New Lynn

Thirty-five firearms were located along with a range of ammunition in excess of 15,000 rounds.

A man is facing 29 serious firearms-related charges after police uncovered 35 firearms and 15,000 rounds of ammunition at three New Lynn properties.

Assisted by the Armed Offenders Squad, police discovered the cache of firearms, including "a range of ammunition" exceeding 15,000 rounds and explosives while searching three New Lynn properties on December 15.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Williams said the search warrants were the result of an investigation into the unlawful possession of firearms allegedly belonging to this person.

"While the man did hold a firearms licence, many of the firearms located were allegedly unlawfully in his possession," he said.

Williams said the 53-year-old man was taken into custody "without incident" and faces 29 charges relating to the unlawful possession of firearms and magazines, as well as an additional charge of possession for supply of cannabis.

Williams said the man’s licence has since been suspended by Te Tari Pūreke, the Firearms Safety Authority.

He has appeared in the Waitākere District Court and is due to reappear on January 8, 2024.

Williams said anyone in breach of the Arms Act can expect to face consequences and said police remain committed to holding those who engage in this behaviour accountable.
