Unlikely intruder breaks into Northland hen house

December 19, 2023

An unlikely intruder has broken into a hen house and made itself at home in Northland – a North Island brown kiwi.

Waipapa woman Jane was checking on her chickens when she made the surprise discovery.

The kiwi was found taking a nap next to one of the chooks, the Department of Conservation said on social media.

"The chickens were surprisingly chill about their visitor and seemed to be open to the new company," DOC said.

"The kiwi also seemed very relaxed in its new sleeping spot, and even took a little stroll around Jane's property before returning for another nap in the hen house."

After some rest and relaxation, the visitor wandered off, hopefully back into the native bush around Jane's home.

DOC said kiwi sightings have become more commonplace in the Far North due to community groups carrying out "intensive predator control and reviving kiwi population numbers".
