Former prison staff, a current employee, a member of the public and an inmate have been charged with corruption and bribery offences at Rimutaka Prison.
The charges come after a three-year investigation into criminal activity at the Upper Hutt prison.
Aged between 37 and 50, police said those charged include a prisoner, a current employee at the prison, one member of the public and three former prison staff.
Police said the "corruption and bribery charges required Attorney General consent to prosecute".
The six alleged offenders are from Auckland, Porirua, Hutt Valley and Hawke's Bay and will appear in the Hutt Valley District Court later today.
The investigation, named Operation Portia, was launched after a drug-related investigation at Rimutaka Prison. Those involved in the previous probe are already before the court.
"During the course of Operation Portia, police interviewed almost 200 people, including Corrections staff, prisoners and other witnesses," a police spokesperson said.
"Our investigation involved tactics like the interrogation of phones, bank data and viewing hours of CCTV.
"This has been an incredibly complex and dynamic investigation with a lot of moving parts."
During the investigation, police said it worked "closely" with Corrections, supporting it to strengthen its management of some systems and processes.
Alongside the corruption and bribery charges, investigators also uncovered other alleged offences, including assault and one case of using a document.
These offences are separate from the corruption charges and resulted in four people being charged.
Four have been "dealt with by the courts" and one prosecution is ongoing.
"As the matters are now before the courts, police are limited in providing any further information."
