Police said more than 15,000 people were breath tested in the area over the weekend, with 67 people testing over the legal alcohol limit.

More than 65 people were caught drink-driving across Auckland's Counties Manukau over the weekend, with police describing the behaviour as "disappointing."

Police said more than 15,000 people were breath tested in the area over the weekend, with 67 people testing over the legal alcohol limit.

Four vehicles were impounded, and two infringements issued for dangerous driving, while a further five people had their licences suspended.

In the week leading up to Christmas, Counties Manukau Road Policing Manager Inspector Tony Wakelin said police want to prevent people from drink-driving, but the message isn't getting through.

"For every 1000 drivers stopped, four were breaking the law and putting other road users at risk," he said.

The legal alcohol limit for a fully licensed driver over 20 is 250mcg per litre of breath. For those under 20, it's zero.

Wakelin said police want to ensure a safe and happy Christmas for everyone this year by making sure people get home safely.

"If you are going to be enjoying a few drinks, make sure you have a plan to get home or a sober driver to assist," Wakelin said.

He warned officers will continue to run 'pop-up' style checkpoints on main roads and smaller, rural and urban roads at any time of the day.
