Alex Batty speaks out for first time after six years missing

December 19, 2023

UK teen Alex Batty has made his first public comments since being found in France after six years missing.

The 17-year-old went on holiday with his mother and grandfather when he was 11. They had been seeking an off-the-grid and alternative life.

Batty's grandmother, who's his legal guardian, hadn't seen or heard from him since the trio's disappearance.

He's now home with his grandmother in a town called Oldham. Returning from a trip to the shops, Batty told the Telegraph: "I'm really sorry I can’t say much... but there's no doubt I'm happy to be home for Christmas."

The UK newspaper reports that, as Batty returned home, a dog ran through the front door and out into the street.

"Don't you go missing like Alex," the teen's grandmother yelled after it.

Greater Manchester police are investigating the disappearance.

He was found by a delivery driver in remote southwestern France earlier this month. Batty was wandering at 3am in the rain by himself in a remote area with a skateboard tucked under his arm.

"I cannot begin to express my relief and happiness that Alex has been found safe and well," his grandmother said.
