A US woman who bought a glass vase for just a few dollars at a charity shop has seen it auctioned off for over $100,000 after it was discovered to be a rare piece of Italian glassware.
Jessica Vincent bought the vase at a Goodwill thrift store in Virginia for just US$3.99, but believed it may have been worth a lot more, she told the New York Times.
"I had a sense that it might be a $1000 or $2000 piece, but I had no clue how good it actually was until I did a little bit more research," she said.
Upon researching online, Vincent discovered it resembled a work by famous Italian architect Carlo Scarpa.
Vincent sent pictures of the vase to the Wright Auction House, whose president Richard Wright quickly got in touch with her.
"The minute I saw the photos I had a really good feeling," Wright told the New York Times.
It sold for US$107,100 (NZ$172,500) last week to a private art collector in Europe after it was identified as being part of Scarpa's 1940s "Pennellate" series.
