Trade Minister Todd McClay will visit India and Singapore, leaving today, to meet with trade counterparts in a trip aimed at advancing New Zealand's relationships with the two countries.

It's McClay's first overseas trip in the role this term, although he also served as Trade Minister in the Key government.

The trip follows Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's commitment during the election campaign to close a free trade agreement with India within three years.

It also follows Foreign Minister Winston Peters' trip to Fiji on Friday and Saturday.

McClay said India and Singapore were two key partners in the Indo-Pacific region and he looked forward to "engaging conversations" with Ministers Piyush Goyal — of India — and Gan Kim Yong — of Singapore.

"The relationship with India is a strategic priority for the coalition government, and we will look at how to strengthen this important connection across a range of areas.

"Meeting in person with Minister Goyal will be essential for developing a strong partnership that enhances opportunities for both our countries."

McClay will also deliver a speech on the Government's ambition for the relationship with India, and participate in a moderated discussion with G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant in front of an audience of national business and community leaders.

McClay will then travel to Singapore, which he said was New Zealand's "most significant trading partner in South East Asia" and a critical hub for New Zealand supply lines.

"They are a key like-minded partner on the importance of international trade rules.

"Establishing a strong relationship early with Minister Gan will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen the New Zealand — Singapore Enhanced Partnership.

"Singapore's innovative and open approach to international trade has made us natural partners on issues such as the green economy and supply chain management."

McClay, who is also the MP for Rotorua, will return to New Zealand on Thursday, December 21.
