Police have referred a person's death in a gas explosion on Great Barrier Island last week to the coroner.

Emergency services were alerted to the Motairehe Rd incident early on Friday morning. One person was found dead.

"A scene examination has since been completed and the fire is not being treated as suspicious," police said today.

"Police are still working to notify the next of kin and the death will now be referred to the coroner.

"Police would like to acknowledge and thank the Great Barrier Island community for the assistance and support they provided to emergency services responding to this incident."
