It will feel like summer again for eastern parts of the country today but the West Coast is in for more heavy rain.

MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan told 1News a northwesterly flow will see eastern parts of the country experience temperatures in the high 20s.

Unlike yesterday the high temperatures will hang around until later in the afternoon.

Auckland and Hamilton can expect a high of 24C, Tauranga 25C, Wellington 19C, Christchurch 29C, and Dunedin 23C.

Christchurch seen from the Port Hills on Sunday.

In the North Island, Gisborne is in for a high of 28C, and Wairoa and Hastings 29C. In the south, Ashburton will see the mercury hit 29C, while Kaikōura and Alexandra will see 28C.

Corrigan said a southerly change into the evening will bring cooler air and showery weather through to Canterbury.

He said very warm, humid air in central parts of the country had seen Wellington start the day in low cloud, which will stick around.

Air New Zealand said four flights so far this morning had been cancelled.

Wellington Airport said outside of those cancellations all other flights are operating as normal.

Meanwhile, an orange heavy rain warning is in place for Buller and Westland about and north of Franz Josef Glacier.

For Buller, the warning is in place until 6pm this afternoon, with MetService warning people to expect 70 to 100mm of rain on top of what has already fallen.

For parts of Westland, the warning is in place until 4pm this afternoon. MetService said people can expect 70 to 100mm of rain about the ranges, and 30 to 50mm near the coast, all on top of what has already fallen.

Thunderstorms are possible for both.

Heavy rain watches and warnings in place for parts of the country on Sunday.

Corrigan said in the 24 hours to 8.30am most weather stations along the West Coast had seen 30 to 70mm of rain fall. A weather station in the hills along the Hokitika River had recorded 101.1mm of rain.

A heavy rain watch is in place for parts of Tasman, Nelson Lakes, parts of Canterbury High Country until late this afternoon and early evening.

These areas can expect periods of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms.

A heavy rain watch is also in place for the Tararua Range until 4am tomorrow, where periods of heavy rain are expected. Corrigan said yesterday it saw "persistent" heavy rain, with a weather station recording 87.3mm of rain.

People can stay up to date with the latest weather watches and warnings on the MetService website.
