The owner of a Hamilton liquor store suffered a serious hand injury after challenging four assailants last night.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Hawke said that four masked individuals entered the store on Whatawhata Rd in Dinsdale around 9.25pm on Saturday.
Two workers, the owner and an employee, were assaulted by the group, with the owner receiving treatment at hospital after suffering injuries to his head and hand. He is now recovering at home.
Hawke said that a scene guard remained in place overnight and that police were making inquires to identify and locate those responsible.
"Police are requesting the public's assistance and want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the offending or saw the vehicle in which the offenders arrived and fled."
The vehicle is described as being similar to a blue Subaru Legacy, he said.
