One person has died after a two-vehicle crash near Cromwell this morning.

The crash on State Highway 6/Gibbston Highway was reported at 7.42am.

Police said another person is in a serious condition.

The road is expected to be closed for some time.

Detours are in place and motorists are advised to expect delays.

The serious crash unit is at the scene.
