Heavy rain, possible thunderstorms for some over the weekend

December 16, 2023
Heavy rain and possible thunderstorms for the lower North Island and west of the South Island this weekend.

Heavy rain and possible thunderstorms are on the cards for the bottom of the North Island and parts of the South Island over the weekend.

A slow-moving front over the northwest of the South Island is behind the bad weather. MetService said: "A moist northwest flow ahead of this front brings periods of heavy rain to western areas of the South Island and the Tararua Range."

MetService has issued an orange heavy rain warning for Buller and parts of the Westland ranges about and north of Harihari into tomorrow afternoon.

For Buller, the forecaster said there will be a "significant burst of heavy rain" from late afternoon. The warning is in place from 10pm tonight until 5pm tomorrow.

"Expect 120 to 160mm of rain, especially about the ranges. Peak intensities of 20 to 30mm/h during Sunday. Thunderstorms possible."

Meanwhile, the warning is in place for the ranges of Westland from 1am to 3pm tomorrow.

"Expect 100 to 150mm of rain," MetService said. "Peak rates of 20 to 30mm/h. Thunderstorms possible."

The forecaster has also issued an additional warning for the Tararua Range in the North Island and parts of Tasman in the south.

A heavy rain watch is in place for the Tararua Range until 2am tomorrow.

The same watch is in place for Tasman west of Takaka from 9pm tonight to 6pm tomorrow.
