Fires have been extinguished at two Cooks Beach houses on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) were called to a house fire on Endeavour Pl about 12.33pm this afternoon.

A second house next door also caught fire shortly after. Both have now been extinguished.

During the blaze, firefighters were seen pumping sea water to douse the flames.

Local radio station Coromandel CFM said on its Facebook page that flames and smoke were visible from Whitianga.

A witness told 1News that the initial fire started in the garage where a hybrid car was parked.
