One dead after gas explosion on Great Barrier Island

One person has died in a gas explosion overnight at a property on Great Barrier Island.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident on Motairehe Rd at about 12.45am this morning.

A police spokesperson said: "A person at the address was located deceased.

"At this early stage, police are treating the fire as unexplained and will be working alongside Fire and Emergency investigators to determine the circumstances of the fire."

A Fire and Emergency (FENZ) spokesperson said a house fire was "well involved" when a crew was called to the scene.

A scene examination is underway this morning, with two FENZ investigators in attendance.

Anyone with information is urged to call 105.
