The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) today revealed more road safety cameras are set to be rolled out around the country.
At present, around 150 safety cameras are in use throughout Aotearoa. Around 90 of these are owned by New Zealand Police, 42 by Auckland Transport, and three by Christchurch City Council.
However, in about mid-2024, police will hand over their cameras to be operated by NZTA Waka Kotahi.
By June 30, 2025, NZTA plans to expand the amount of safety cameras to 200 across the NZTA network, increasing the current amount by 50.
While the number of additional cameras beyond this point has not been finalised, NZTA said it's currently establishing the systems, processes, and capability to take over the police safety cameras, and roll out the additional ones in a “managed way”.
“Over time, the plan is to increase the number of safety cameras throughout the country,” said NZTA.
“We are still deciding on the number of cameras and mixture of camera types to use, to deliver the most effective outcomes.”
